How do I select what upgrades are best for my ATV? Follow these simple guidelines to pick the correct setup for you.

Some ATV models have shocks that are non-rebuildable. If your shock is non-rebuildable, see Option #3 below, our G3-S Custom Series Shock. If your shock is rebuildable, you have three options to choose from. Not sure if your ATV shocks are rebuildable? Give us a call at 951.279.6655.

Option #1: The first thing and most cost effective upgrade you can do to your ATV is to select springs with the proper spring rate for your needs. RT Hi-Performance Spring Kits for the Front and Rear are a must, as most stock ATVs come grossly under-sprung.

HONDA TRX450R

 

 

 

The Honda TRX450R features suspension that is rebuildable, which means you have the option to choose from RT Hi-Performance Springs, a Gold Valve Conversion Kit, or G3-S Custom Series Shocks.

In stock form, this popular Honda model leaves little to no room to back off preload on the front shocks. Riders often feel they can't tune out the headshake caused on small chatter by the stock suspension package.

YAMAHA YFZ450R and YFZ450

 

The later model Yamaha YFZ450 features front suspension that is not rebuildable. The rear shock and older model front suspension is rebuildable. G3-S Custom Shocks are the only option for the new YFZ450 front shocks that aren't rebuildable, while RT Hi-Performance Springs, Gold Valve Kits, or the G3-S Custom Series shock options apply to the other models and rear suspension.

The newer YFZ450 front suspension features only preload adjustment (no compression or rebound) really limiting how dialed in you can get the suspension. Most riders comment the front is too soft, and without adjustment a shock upgrade is the only solution. On the rear, riders often comment the suspension is a bit stiff and tends to pack going through bumps and chatter causing a rough ride. The older model YFZ450's have been notorious with our test riders for being rough over chatter. Through extensive testing, we have found a personalized suspension setup featuring Gold Valves can absorb the small bumps and chatter while also improving bottoming resistance, resulting in an unbelievable ride.

The Yamaha YFZ450R comes straight out of the box with a track specific setup. YAMAHA RAPTOR 700

Race Tech upgrades more Yamaha Raptor 700 suspension than any other ATV. This popular model has an overall soft (too soft!) feel causing an extremely choppy feel from the rear shock. Also, because of being grossly soft, the stock ride causes a lot of body roll and dive under braking on the front shocks. The past few seasons, Race Tech has done numerous tests on the Suzuki LTR450 suspension. In stock form test riders often complained about a deflecting feeling coming from the front shocks. On the rear, the common feedback was an extremely soft feel that stays too low in the stroke. Proper rate RT Hi-Performance Springs regain proper balance to the ride, while Gold Valves are designed to eliminate the deflective feel and provide great bottoming resistance.

CAN-AM DS450 XMX and XXC

The Can-Am DS450 XMX features long travel suspension in stock form; however, through testing riders consistently felt the stock suspension was extremely soft and undersprung. The soft suspension caused an extreme amount of harsh bottoming. Race Tech recommends RT Hi-Performance Springs with a stiffer rate to regain proper balance to this ATV. Gold Valves provide a plush feel eliminating harshness and drastically improving bottoming resistance.

 

The Can-Am DS450 XXC features standard travel suspension. Riders in testing often felt extreme amounts of body roll. Race Tech recommends a personalized setup with RT Hi-Performance Springs and Gold Valves to provide a consitent, plush feel with improved bottoming resistance.

KTM 450/525 SX and XC

The KTM 450/525 SX and XC models have been found through testing to have a stock setup that is too soft. The soft suspension created many bottoming situations, especially on g-outs and drop offs, and an extreme amount of dive in the front end. Race Tech recommends RT Hi-Performance Springs and Gold Valves to regain proper balance and improve bottoming resistance while still creating a plush feel over small chatter.
